The times, they are a-flying!!

Ok, so another weekend passes by very quickly, and we're already in the third quarter of 2013! More and more people are moving on: getting engaged, married, having kids, new jobs!

And here I am, working at the same place & same project for more than three years, and at the same seat for just as long!!! Same flat, and same roomie since I moved here.Not much has changed for quite some time now. And I'm happy with that. I'm not a big fan of change. So, all's well that stays well!

Watched the movie Despicable Me 2 yesterday.

A very entertaining and fun movie. I cant remember the first movie that well, so can't say which one was better. Enjoyed the minions, and can't wait for the next minion movie, coming out sometime in the future.
Loved the minion songs (I swear & YMCA) and the way they sing in their minion language!
Also, while the credits were rolling, there were some scenes of minions auditioning for the next minion movie, one which had the minions blowing soap bubbles. The 3-D effect for these was so good, the kid in the next seat actually jumped up and put his hands out to burst the bubbles!!!

This was followed by lunch at the best Italian place I've been to. Ate till our stomachs ached! 

Elizabethtown

Ok, so I just saw this movie, with nothing better to do on a Saturday night. And I did NOT like it.

I'd read about it somewhere and it roused my interest, mainly because of Kirsten Dunst's character, which was apparently a perfect example of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl.
I thought she would be like a mix of a whimsical, quirky, sweet, girlish girl. And was I wrong! She came off as more of a stalker, who preys on innocent, vulnerable men, in this instance, Orlando Bloom.

Faced by failure at work causing a loss of about 1 Billion USD, Drew is about to kill himself, when his sister calls saying their Dad died while visiting his family in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. So Drew leaves for Elizabethtown to get him back home. He meets stewardess Claire, who is the MPDG in question. She gives him her number, and he calls her in a weak moment, and they end up talking all night. She falls in love and tells him so, he is too overwhelmed by his failure and Dad's death and is unable to respond and so leaves her. The rest of the movie is about how she gets him out of his depression or whatever, and teaches him to live again! Bollywood like you say? Yes, VERY!

I just realized I cant stand Kirsten Dunst, she was just about ok in the Spiderman movies, but this is the last of her movies I'll be watching for some time.
Oralndo Bloom wasn't that great either, may be its cause I'm not used to seeing him as anyone but Legolas!

The saving grace of the movie was Susan Sarandon as Drew's mother, who comes for the memorial to Elizabethtown, and meets all her husband's people. She even tap dances to Moon River!

Overall, I wouldn't have missed anything by not watching this movie. A disappointment. Nice posters though.

Go Goa Gone

 
Ok, so I go this movie on the recommendation of someone I thought was a good judge of movies, alas, I was wrong! I was thoroughly disappointed by this piece of crap posing as a movie!
Maybe I wasnt in that great a mood, so didnt fine the movie funny. I mean, i found this movie funny, and GGG was along similar lines!

I cannot blame only her for the misleading review, since I also thought it would be a good movie, and just needed someone to validate my thoughts I guess! Anyway, I'm just happy I didn't take Adi to watch it in the theater cos I never would've heard the end of it!

The start of the movie gave a bit of a Delhi Belly feel, but that movie was in a different class altogether.

The movie trailers shown on TV had a couple of good, funny scenes, one with the dumb charades in the jungle, and another where the three start doubting the Russian Saif, and he turns around and says, "Bhenchod, Delhi se hun mein!!" Or something like that.
Little did I know that these were the only two scenes that were really funny in the whole movie. More was expected from Saif, though not from the others, who delivered as per expectations. Its another story that the expectations were really low. Sigh. All in all, a waste.

The Great Gatsby - The Movie

Ok, so I love reading books, fiction mainly, no exclusively! Non-fiction does not interest me much, except for books by Bill Bryson, and some other authors whose names I cant recollect. You see, I love drama, and real life (at least mine) just doesn't have enough of it! That's what leads me to books.

However, I've missed out on many classics, which I ought to have read in my childhood, and so am catching up now. And when I heard that a movie based on The Great Gatsby was gonna release soon, I went and got myself a copy of the book, so I could read it first and then watch the movie.

So, I started reading the book, but due to lack of time, I couldn't complete it by the time the movie was released, and so went for the movie before reading the book, a first for me!

• I liked the movie, I really did.
• Liked the way the camera kept sweeping across the landscape.
• Liked all the party scenes, all the colors and lights and people
• Really liked the haircuts of the ladies!
• Amitabh Bachchan was a waste in the movie, I mean he wasn't really required, was he? I'll have to complete the book to know for sure. 
• The end was a little depressing, but I'm really gonna have to read the book before saying any further.
• I've been watching Downton Abbey which is set in UK, and just realized that this movie is set in the same time frame, but in the USA! 
• Loved Leonardo DiCaprio & Carey Mulligan as Gatsby & his long lost love Daisy. I read somewhere that many others were considered for the role of Daisy (even Scarlett Johansson), but CM was perfect.

 

• I cannot get over how young Leonardo DiCaprio looks! I mean the he must be in early 40s or something, right 'ol sport'?

A hauntingly beautiful song. A quote I read somewhere (I think it was said by the Music Producer for the movie) sums it up nicely:

"I think it’s an unusual song, because on the one hand, it has romance and tells a love story, but at the same time, it’s filled with real yearning and melancholy, which I think is at the heart of the story"

Another really good song, I thought it was an original song, but its actually a cover. It was written by Winehouse and Mark Ronson. Apparently it was inspired by a boy-friend, who left her for an ex-girlfriend, leaving her going to "black" with drinking and depression.

Bombay Talkies

Ok, so I was in Mumbai last week, and had the best, most awesome movie experience ever!! We went for the movie "Bombay Talkies", at the Cinemax Gold Screen in Infinity Mall, Andheri.

I never knew such a place existed, never even imagined it. At first, it looked like any other movie hall, with more softer and larger seats. But as we explored more and found that the leg rest went right up (see below pic) and we could adjust the head rest also. Ma later told us that some people had blankets also, and were all cozy in their seats!

I really wanted to take a pic of myself in the seat, but couldn't. So found the below pic on Google:

I've heard it said that certain rich foods are sinful, but I think seats like these have got to be much more sinful!
This is the benchmark against which all future movie viewing experiences will be compared!!

The movie wasn't that great, which turned out to be a good thing, since I got to catch up on some sleep. I guess they were trying to be modern or something, don't know what exactly. I just didn't see the point of the movie. They were just a bunch of random short stories.

I expected a bit of glamour and sparkle and shine, since Karan Johar and Zoya Akhtar directed two of the stories, but alas, went home disappointed, since it was pretty dull!
Rani Mukherji looked good though, but then again I think she'd look good in anything after Aiyya!

All in all, the movie sucked, and would have been a waste had it not been for the seats!
