Now I've been wanting to learn how to ride a bike for a really long time, but fear of things like falling/crashing has stopped me. Also, when I was living at home there never really was a need for a bike. I mean who needs bikes when you got cars??
But here in Pune, there's no car, and even if there was one, parking and stuff is a big headache, the only viable option is a bike. So after pestering my roomie for some time, she agreed to teach me.
She has a Deo, which is like a really heavy bike. Ideally you would want to start learning with a Scooty or something.
So I started learning the traditional way, me trying to balance on the bike with my legs in the air, and both my roomies holding the bike and running behind me. Initially it was like the bike had a mind of its own. I used to move the steering (is that what you call it?) a little to the right, and it would turn completely! And I never realised this, but taking turns on a bike is really tricky. When we reached the end of the road and had to turn, my hand would automatically turn upside down; like I would be holding the bike handle with my palm facing upwards. I didn't even realise I was doing this, until my roomies stopped the bike and started pointing at the bike handle and laughing.
Anyway, after a couple of rounds I'd had enough. My hands were aching from the stretch between my thumb and pointing finger, and my knees were paining due to the sudden weight I was putting on them whenever I thought I was going to fall. Never realized this was gonna be so tiring!
I convinced my roomies it was too hot to continue, not that they needed much convincing as they were running behind me the whole time; with promises to continue this next weekend, like we weren't all lying. All in all, I wouldn't say it was time wasted, at least I tried and know for sure now, NO BIKES for me!!
P.S. Forget bikes, I've started seriously saving for a car now! :D
